A WILD NORWAY ELOPEMENT ABOVE ÅLESUND
When Ekaterina reached out to me through MyWed to plan a Norway elopement, I already had a feeling this day would be something truly memorable. And it had to be – because the shoot was scheduled for my birthday. Yes, some photographers do work even during their birthdays!
Ekaterina and Roman had recently tied the knot and wanted to mark the beginning of their marriage with a romantic escape to one of the most beautiful corners of Norway. Instead of a traditional wedding day, they chose wind, cliffs and endless fjord views – just the two of them and the silence above Ålesund. I couldn’t imagine a better place and company to spend my birthday!
Our original idea was ambitious: meet at 5 a.m. and hike Sukkertoppen mountain to see the sunrise. Then we flirted with the idea of a late sunset session around 8 p.m. But life had other plans – in the end we finally met around 11 a.m., right under the harsh Norwegian midday sun. Most photographers would consider this part of the day a worst case scenario. Luckily, over the years I’ve learned how to work with that bright, dramatic harsh light and to turn it into something very cinematic – and this day was the perfect opportunity to let that skill “shine” – literally.
WHY THIS ELOPEMENT WAS SO SPECIAL
What made this elopement in Ålesund unforgettable for me wasn’t just the stunning views or the light—it was the couple. Ekaterina and Roman were effortlessly joyful, laid-back, and completely absorbed in each other. Watching them enjoy the moment, laughing and being fully present, reminded me why I love doing this work.
So yes, I nearly missed my birthday celebration… but photographing this Norway elopement was absolutely worth it! Even though we had to sweat so hard to get to the mountaintop. I hope you enjoy browsing through this gallery as much as I enjoyed creating it!
